Current publications

It has been my pleasure and privilege to work for, work with, and mentor many talented men and women in the publishing industry. Right now I am freelancing and write regularly for the New York Times, Information Security, CIO, HowStuffWorks.com, Newsforge.com, Network Computing, various CDW magazines, Sam Whitmore's Media Survey, and Business Communications Review. The most updated place to find links to all my current work is my strominator.com blog

Over the past two decades, I have held editorial management positions on numerous publications in the computer technical trade press in the areas covering networking and enterprise IT, reseller/channel, OEM, and consumer/enthusiast focus. Many of these were at various stints at CMP Media, launching a new series of Web properties under the DesignLine series of sites for the Electronics Group, as the Technology Editor at VARBusiness, and as the founding editor-in-chief of Network Computing magazine. I also held the position of Editor-in-Chief for Tom's Hardware Guides and launched a new series of Web properties under the Guru series for them in 2005.

In 1995, I began an almost weekly series of essays called Web Informant essays that are archived elsewhere on this site, and available via email to anyone. While the email sequence continues, the best place to view this content is my blog, where I post more frequently.

I also write a monthly column for the Yomiuri Shimbun, one of the largest circulation newspapers in Japan. My essays appear on the first Tuesday of every month on both the web site, called the Daily Yomiuri, and in the print edition under the Cyberworld section. I began writing for them in August 1998.

Published books

I have written two books: Internet Messaging (1998) with Marshall T. Rose and Home Networking Survival Guide (2002) by myself. There was another "zeroth" book on OS/2 that I co-wrote with Mike Edelhart back in the late 1980s but I'd rather forget about that experience, and anyway the book was never published.

The Recent Past

If you are looking for some of my past work, you can either search my web site or check any of the links below to track down a particular article. I have organized them into producing white papers and advertorial supplements, producing entire web sites, and general freelance assignments. I should warn you that a lot of these links aren't going to work.

·        In 2005, I took over the editorial operations for TG Publishing, owners of Tom'sHardware.com. I wrote many pieces for them, and helped to launch an entire new series of sites under the Guru label to expand their reach into gaming, digital entertainment, and mobility products. Some of my favorite articles are linked to here.

·        In August 2000, I began freelancing for VARBusiness magazine, writing features and technology stories. Then I began working full-time for them as Technology Editor from April 2002 to June of 2004. During this tenure, I published over a hundred stories, reviews, and a few covers along the way. I am particularly proud of two entire issues that I organized, assigned all the copy, edited, and produced: State of Technology 2003: Tech Innovators, State of Technology 2002.

·        I also wrote a monthly column from 2000-2002 for TechTargetâs SearchSecurity.com web site, where I reviewed security-related products under David Strom's Security Tool Shed. I continue to work for the company's print magazine today.

Past Web Sites

I have assembled a variety of editorial content for the following web sites, and in some cases played the role of a managing editor and hired other writers. This goes back to the dark ages when the Web was really getting started. Luckily, very few pages remain of this work. But I have cataloged it here for completeness.

The Distant Past

Over the years I have written thousands of articles for numerous publications and Web sites, and appeared on radio and TV shows. Here is as complete and accurate a list of what I have done. And before you come after me, I apologize that many of the article links are broken. I can't keep up with the various sites moving my stuff around!
